Courtney Resolution Honors Aircraft Carrier Centennial

U.S. Rep.Joe Courtney is behind a move to officially honor 100 years of carriers on the seas.

VERNON, CT — U.S. Rep Joe Courtney (CT-02), the chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces, and Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-01), Ranking Member, unveiled Sunday their bipartisan resolution honoring the Centennial of Navy Aircraft Carriers.

On March 20, 1922, following a two-year conversion at Norfolk Naval Yard, the former USS Jupiter (Collier No. 3) was recommissioned as the United States Navy’s first Aircraft Carrier USS Langley (CV 1).

“Aircraft Carriers have been and will continue to be one of the most important platforms for America’s projection forces,” Courtney said. “As Chairman of the Seapower Subcommittee, I’ve been honored to work with Congressman Wittman to ensure we’re directing strong, intelligent funding towards our nation’s fleet of carriers, and towards our American shipbuilders, manufacturers, and workforce we rely on to produce them. U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers have helped ensure peace, economic prosperity, and adherence to the international rule of law for 100 years now, and I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan resolution with Congressman Wittman to mark their Centennial.”

Whitman said, “For 100 years, Aircraft Carriers have served an invaluable role in the defense of our nation. As they have modernized throughout the years, Aircraft Carriers have adapted to be able to provide warfighting capabilities across the full spectrum of conflict. In a time of Great Power Competition, Aircraft Carriers will continue to be the preeminent conventional power projection platform that our Commander in Chief will use in times of conflict to ensure stability and peace throughout the world. Today is an especially exciting day for Virginia, as Aircraft Carriers are exclusively built and in the Commonwealth. I am honored introduce this resolution with my colleague, Representative Joe Courtney, to celebrate the Centennial of Navy Aircraft Carriers.”
